From the folks at New-York-Trail-Ultrarunning: On May 15th at a race in Sussex County NJ our own Phil McCarthy broke the 48-Hour American Running record! Phil ran 257.34 miles total! That is an average pace of 11:12 for 48 hours straight! McCarthy shattered the previous record of 248.55 miles held by John Geesler, set in 2003. JOIN fellow runners and friends on Wednesday May 25th to celebrate with Phil his new American record! We have reserved our own room with couches etc. at McAnn’s Bar & Grill ( www.mcanns46.com), 3 West 46th St. (just west of 5th Ave). Phil will be there to talk about and answer questions about his record run. We will have some buffet style food provided. There will be a cash bar and there is a full menu if you want to order other food. We plan to get started at 6:00PM and stay well into the night! Feel free to invite and bring along friends who want to celebrate with us as well. Please RSVP to the event at www.meetup.com/New-York-Trail-Ultrarunning or just send me an email ( runningmeetup@gmail.com) to let us know you're coming. Hope to see you all there!

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death last Tuesday (5/17) of Bill Fischer, one of the New York area's most prolific ultra runners, and supporter of ultra running events. Some of the highlights of his ultra career include finishes at Western States, Vermont, and winner of the 1990 BUS Grand Prix. He was also a frequent and dependable volunteer at many BUS events. In August 2007, he ran his last ultra... Ralph's Run... in memory of his good friend Ralph Balsamo.
Bill died after a long fight with bladder cancer. He is survived by his 16 year old son. An informal memorial has been planned for this Saturday, 5/21, at 11:30am in the Meridiana Restaurant (2756 Broadway, south of 106th St in Manhattan). All area ultra runners and friends are invited.

I'm in Atlanta this weekend... getting ready to run the Publix Georgia Marathon. Anyone else down here for this hilly but scenic race? www.inggeorgiamarathon.com/3/21/11- now it's the day after. Those hills get worse every year... every old injury I've ever had seemed to come back during this race... but I managed to limp thru it with a 4:34 finish. This race will never be a Boston qualifier... for anyone.

Thanks Vinny... Your "not review" really caught the flavor of this year's Caumsett.
... and for any of you other bloggers out there in the ultra world, please share your links on this forum... Thanks.

Just a reminder that the free, low key St.Patricks Day Marathon [ www.thestpatricksdaymarathon.com/] is this weekend (on Sunday, 3/13). From the organizers: Full Marathon (26.2 miles), Half Marathon (13.1 miles), 10K Get ready for a fantastic trail course! Expect a true wilderness experience in the deep forests of the Bronx. The trails are all well maintained. Little technical trail conditions should be expected. The trails are a mix of packed dirt, small granular rock, and crushed soft leaf surfaces. Let us know here what you think about this urban trail experience.

Gary Corbitt invites you, and any other friends who knew Ted, to an opening of the Ted Corbitt Archives this Thursday, Feb. 24, from 2 to 7 PM at: ICD (Institute for Crippled Diseases) 340 East 24 St., on the second floor Thanks to Dave Obelkevich for calling this to our attention... he writes: "The opening will display his [Ted's] equipment and papers about his Health and Rehabilitation programs. I think that Gary will come up from Jacksonville, and I will be there about 5:30 or 6:00. I hope to see all of you there. We want to keep memories of Ted alive. Eight days ago, I led a group of 26 runners on Ted's course of 32 miles around Manhattan. But we did it only once, not the 2 or 3 times that Ted did!" If you can make it, please take this opportunity to remember and to honor this great man of ultra running, and this great humanitarian... and please use this forum to share some of your running experiences with Ted.

Sorry I seem to be the only one posting anything on this forum... hopefully some of you will join in soon... Just click nyur.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=login, then "Create New Account" to register. I know it seems like a lot of work, but it's necessary and you only have to do it once... and you can use any username/avatar you like... and your email is used only to complete the registration process and is hidden from all posting displays. Also, You can login/register using one your existing social network accounts (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) But the real reason for THIS post is that I need a ride to (or at least back from) Caumsett from the New York City area. Anybody got any empty seats in their car?

Thought I'd give it a try... snow covered trails made it VERY difficult for me, so I quit after 1 loop... but overall I think it was a fun experience, and well run by the organizers... post race chocolate is great. Check out the race web site ( www.thevalentinesdaymarathon.com/) for details and results. I saw a few other ultra runners out there. What were their experiences? If this winter ever ends, and the snow ever melts this will be a great trail run... next race in the Holiday Marathon series is the www.thestpatricksdaymarathon.com/. It will be fun.
